Baptism into Christ Jesus

Romans 6:3-4

Later in the afternoon, the body of Trinity Bible Church gathered to witness the baptisms of Courtney Hicks, Ryan Eriksen, and Caleb Eriksen.  That morning, Pastor Philip preached on what it meant to be baptized into Christ Jesus.  There is a spiritual baptism that takes place in all believers when they are born again — not a second baptism, as some teach, but a spiritual immersion into Christ, into His death, burial, and resurrection that is inseparable from conversion.  This baptism is what water baptism represents.

Baptism into Christ Jesus

  • baptizō is a common Greek word that means submerge or immerse.
  • All believers have been spiritually baptized into Christ Jesus.
  • We have intimate fellowship with Christ (1 Corinthians 6:17; 1 John 1:3).
  • In Christ we become acceptable to the Father (Galatians 3:27; Isaiah 61:10).

Baptism into his death

  • All believers have been immersed into Jesus’ death.
  • What happened at Jesus’ death:
    • Jesus took on the sin of the elect and was therefore guilty before the Father (2 Corinthians 5:21).
    • The penalty for that sin was paid and the guilt was removed (Romans 5:25).
  • We must have more than a passing affiliation with his death.
  • We must be intimately connected to it.
  • We must put to death our sinful nature (Romans 6:12; Colossians 3:5).

We were . . . buried with him

  • This emphasizes the completeness of death.
  • It shows that we connected with him beyond his death.

As Christ was raised from the dead

  • There can be no resurrection without first dying.
  • If you share in Christ’s death, you will certainly share in his resurrection (Colossians 2:12).

We too might walk in newness of life

  • “too” points to believers.
  • Our walk should be like Christ’s walk (1 John 2:6).

Seven “with him” statements:

  1. We were crucified with him (Romans 6:6; Galatians 2:20).
  2. We were buried with him (Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12).
  3. We were made alive with him (Ephesians 2:5, Colossians 2:12).
  4. We will be seated in the heavenly places with him (Ephesians 2:6).
  5. We are co-heirs with him (Romans 8:17).
  6. We will be glorified with him (Romans 8:17).
  7. We will reign with him (2 Timothy 2:12).
