Committed to teaching and obeying the word of God

Respond to the Word

Luke 8:16-21

Jesus followed up the Parable of the Soils with further instruction about how to respond to the word. In this short section (Luke 8:16-18) and the next (Luke 8:19-21) we find four ways that we are to respond: share it, embody it, use it, and obey it.

 Sermon Notes

“Take care then how you hear” (v18)

  • How you hear means how you respond to God’s word
  • Four Was we should respond to the word:
    • Share It
    • Embody It
    • Use It
    • Obey It

Share It

  • Lighting a lamp
    • In scripture, light can symbolize:
      • holiness
      • life in Christ
      • In this case, it symbolizes the truth of the gospel
    • To light a lamp (in this passage) means to respond to the gospel
  • Covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed
    • It makes the light useless
    • It extinguishes the light
  • No one who responds to the gospel hides it from anyone
    • If you do hide it, the gospel is extinguished in you like seed in the rocky or thorny soil
    • Those who have rightly responded to the gospel (the good soil) do not do this
  • Puts it on a stand
    • Position it so that it is the most visible
    • in light of the Parable of the Soils, Jesus did not want the disciples to be selective with whom they shared to gospel

Embody It

  • What is on the inside is just as important as what is on the outside
  • What is hidden or secret will be known
  • Examine yourself carefully

Use It

  • to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks he has will be taken away
  • The Parable of the Talents is about stewardship of what God has entrusted to us
    • If you are a good steward, you are rewarded
    • If you are a poor steward, you are thrown out
    • You don’t lose your salvation — it’s evidence you weren’t saved to begin with
  • Luke 8 is specifically about stewardship of God’s word
  • How to be a steward of God’s word:
    • A steward uses something for it intended purpose.
    • Seven purposes of God’s word:
      • To guide
      • To convict
      • To sanctify
      • To instruct
      • To encourage
      • To defend
      • To mature
  • A steward is diligent and faithful
  • A steward is fruitful

Obey It

  • My family are those who hear the word of God and do it
  • Your relationship to Christ is proven by your obedience
